| Know How to Prepare and Respond to Minnesota Winters |
|
Winter in Minnesota is beautiful, but.. Most Minnesotans, through years of practice and experience, are knowledgeable about winter weather conditions. We know how to dress, drive, be active outdoors and generally get through the winter with our lives, homes and property intact. Nonetheless, deaths and injuries occur every winter because people fail to take precautions. Carelessness, overconfidence, ignorance and innocence can lead to damage, injury or death from winter weather conditions. To help Minnesota residents minimize risks and mitigate the hazards of winter, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety — in collaboration with the National Weather Service and other state, federal and non-profit agencies — sponsors “Winter Hazard Awareness Week” each fall to educate, inform, remind and reinforce the behaviors that lead to a warm, safe and enjoyable winter season. The event includes a media campaign, literature, this Web site and other informational materials. The week-long educational campaign targets specific information each day that can be used in conjunction with school, church, or civic programs. |
| Post Storm Survey |
|
Throughout the winter, you are invited to participate in a Post Storm Survey.
The objective of the survey is to provide insight into the way people deal with hazardous winter weather. This information is important to the weather forecasting community to improve their communications to the public. This is the second full winter of the survey with results from last winter available here (pdf). The survey was created by Matt Taraldsen, a meteorology student at the St. Cloud State University Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, under the guidance of Dr. Anthony Hansen, Communication Studies Professor Suzanne Stangl-Erkens and meteorologists from the National Weather Service in Duluth. |
